STEM Talk – Meet Ms. Mieza, The Head Of Department Of Science!

STEM Talk with Ms. Mieza

Science is one of the most important channels of knowledge after religion. Science plays an essential role as well as functions to benefit the society as a whole: creating new knowledge, improving education, and increasing the quality of people’s lives. At Itqan, we ensure that our students are well-equipped with knowledge of physical sciences that co-exists with Islamic studies!

Itqan Schools proudly present to you our experienced and professional educator in the field of Science, Ms. Mieza! She is currently teaching Science at Itqan Integrated School and is also the Head of Department for Science.

She graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2013. She holds her first degree from UiTM Kuala Pilah, majoring in Biology. Prior to teaching in Itqan, she was a Chemistry teacher located in Johor Bahru and a tuition teacher in Selangor. Throughout her career, she was tasked to teach Chemistry and other Science related subjects, implying the sufficient teaching experience she has with school students. Now, it has already been six and a half years since she joined Itqan Integrated School!

According to Ms. Mieza, she believes that Itqan is beyond an Islamic school, but rather, a progressive and dynamic education system that also heavily emphasises on academic excellence. The curriculum Itqan adopts is from Cambridge, and she uses various technology-driven methods to conduct her classes. Being a science teacher, she prefers using videos for demonstrations, hands-on activities as well as experiments to explore more on a certain topic using scientific and empirical methods. As for the younger students, she prefers to bring them outdoors where the students are able to use their five senses and enhance their motor skills as well as enhancing their understanding towards Science.

To her, student competency is not necessarily reflected in examinations or tests, but how they apply their knowledge in their daily lives is the most important indication that the student has learned well. Another way of measuring effectiveness is when the students are able to perform certain tasks by practice or experiencing them first hand. She believes that students understand better when they experience or explore their surroundings themselves.

Of course, this doesn’t stop here. Future prospects of Itqan are bright, and Ms. Mieza is looking forward to collaborating with STEM teachers to conduct better and meaningful classes. She takes the view that by bridging STEM, Science and faith, it will be an encompassing experience for students that could benefit their self development.
